Luther spent much of his life translating the Bible and polishing his translation.
Accuracy was very important to the Reformer. In 1530, Luther published an essay titled On Translating: An Open Letter. In this essay, Luther says: “This I can testify with a good conscience—I gave [translation] my utmost in care and effort… I have done it as a service to the dear Christians and to the honor of One who sits above.” (Luther’s Works vol. 35, p. 143).
Those who do translation in the worldwide ministry of the Lutheran Heritage Foundation share Luther’s concerns.
The devil is constantly trying to undermine the translation work, thereby altering what God has said. Satan did this successfully with Eve (Genesis 3:1). The devil tried this unsuccessfully with Jesus (Matthew 4:1-11).
In your daily prayers, ask God to stave off and destroy all attempts to undermine the translation of His living Word, His manna of life for the spiritually starving. Pray also that God will work through you, and others, to provide for the needs of these consecrated translators to translate and speak God’s living Word in many tongues.
Dear Lord Jesus, just as you repeatedly drove away the devil and demons from your children—as described in the Gospels (Mark 1:23-27; 5:2-13; 7:25-30)—give Lutheran Heritage Foundation translators Your assurance that you are watching over them to prevent the devil from twisting and destroying their work for You. We pray this with the confidence in Your intercessory name, and for the extension of Your Kingdom. Amen.
