Rev. James May resigns

The Lutheran Heritage Foundation regrets to announce that Rev. James May has resigned from his call as translation project coordinator for Africa, effective Mar. 31, 2010.

“With the current economy in the U.S. and abroad, LHF is focusing even more precisely on its mission of translating and publishing the books of our Lutheran faith,” said Rev. James Fandrey, LHF executive director. “This would require Rev. May to dedicate most of his time to overseeing translation work.

“But Rev. May’s heart is for the primary tasks of a missionary – preaching and teaching – and so he has decided to seek new ways to make that possible in Africa. We wish him and his family the very best, and pray that God would continue to bless Rev. May’s ministry,” Rev. Fandrey said.

Rev. May accepted the call to LHF 18 months ago as assistant to Rev. Dr. Anssi Simojoki, who was then overseeing LHF work in Africa. When Rev. Simojoki retired in December 2009, Rev. May assumed leadership.

Rev. Fandrey said that he, with the LHF Board of Directors, will be looking carefully at several options for continuing LHF’s presence in Kenya in the coming months.

In the meantime, LHF translators and project coordinators in Kenya and other African countries (such as Sudan, Tanzania, South Africa, Nigeria, Madagascar and Ethiopia) will continue overseeing LHF projects in those areas.  For example, Lutheran leaders in Kenya are eagerly anticipating LHF’s upcoming publication of the Gusii (Kisii) hymnal and the Swahili Book of Concord.

“In Africa and around the world, LHF remains committed to producing Lutheran books in the languages of the people who need them,” Rev. Fandrey concluded. “God sometimes calls His missionaries to new fields of service, yet the books they leave behind teach for generations to come.”
